Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art – North Parking Lot Elevator Tower & Walkway Project

When art exhibits need protecting, GeoSonics/Vibra-Tech is called in to develop a vibration monitoring plan.

In order to construct a new elevator tower and elevated walkway adjacent to an existing structure on the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art site, rock excavation was necessary. Project personnel were concerned that ground vibration caused by rock excavation may cause stress to the art exhibits in the galleries near the project site. GeoSonics/Vibra-Tech conducted a site visit and an engineering study to define the objects of concern. We also established vibration criteria for the art galleries and included recommendations as to the type, location and duration of monitoring activities. Ground vibration from rock excavation and construction activity was monitored inside the galleries. If vibration levels exceeded a vibration amplitude warning level, the system would notify project personnel with a lighted alarm/siren and email/text alert.
