GeoSonics/Vibra-Tech evaluated and developed a vibration control plan during a busy roadway construction project.
Construction of a North Atlanta interchange at Interstate 285 at SR 400 included additional lanes of traffic, the construction of several new bridges and the reconstruction of multiple ramps and intersections in the area. Before North Perimeter Contractors LLC began reconstruction, they hired GeoSonics/Vibra-Tech to evaluate the proposed vibration inducing construction activities and identify the potential impacts these activities may have on existing properties, structures and utilities located in the area of the proposed work. A detailed evaluation was needed so GeoSonics/Vibra-Tech could ultimately develop a vibration control plan for the Georgia Department of Transportation. The vibration control plan included structure specific vibration criteria limits, a plan for the resolution of vibration related public concerns, site reconnaissance of properties located near vibration inducing activities, pre-construction surveys of structures that may be impacted by vibrations, evaluation of each structure’s sensitivity to vibrations, recommendations for vibration monitoring at structures and predictions for vibration levels at varying distances from the vibration source. Prior to construction, GeoSonics/Vibra-Tech conducted 140 inspections of structures located within approximately 500 feet of any blast location and 100 feet of any pile driving compaction or demolition activity. To monitor vibration levels during the planned construction activity, GeoSonics/Vibra-Tech installed Re:mote seismic monitors. Six accelerometers with spectrum analyzer hardware were also set up to monitor at sensitive medical buildings adjacent to the construction. Data was uploaded to a customized client website. Email and text message alerts were set up to notify project personnel if vibration levels were approaching set limits.
